Valentine Rose Nebula from Night Sky Observatory

Sh2-174, commonly known as the Valentine Rose Nebula, is a remarkably faint nebula in the northern constellation Cepheus, approximately 980 light-years away. Originally cataloged by Stewart Sharpless in 1959 as an H II region, it was later associated with the hot white dwarf GD 561 and classified as a planetary nebula. Its delicate, irregular structure and contrasting hydrogen and oxygen emission give it the rose-like appearance that inspired its popular name.

What makes the Valentine Rose particularly intriguing is its unusual relationship with GD 561. The white dwarf is noticeably offset from the apparent center of the nebulosity, and studies indicate that the system is interacting with surrounding interstellar material. This interaction helps produce the nebula's asymmetric appearance. Its exact nature has also been debated, with research considering whether Sh2-174 is truly an evolved planetary nebula interacting with the interstellar medium or surrounding interstellar gas ionized by the passing white dwarf.

As I haven’t yet outfitted my observatory with electronic motors to move the dome (hopefully in the next couple of months), I’ve been imaging with my GT102 in portable mode. Staying up all night to move the dome every 30 mins to 1 hour is just not in the cards for me. If the equipment doesn’t arrive before the deep winter, I could handle this as the dark skies would start much sooner. I can’t wait until this obsy is completely operational!

So this is my attempt at this really faint nebula. Tracking with the iOptron iEQ30 Pro was hit and miss, so I lost a few subs. And my dew heater strip failed during one session. Was able to fix it for the next evening, but I purchased a few more for backups. Could probably use another 10-12 hours, but I have other fish to fry 🤩.
